Sunspots - NASA Science

Solar Minimum Sunspot During the past 24 hours, sunspot AR2715 has almost quadrupled in size, growing two dark cores larger than Earth. The active region is now crackling with low-level solar flares such as this C2-class explosion recorded by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory at 01:15 UT on June 21st. A pulse of extreme ultraviolet radiation from the flare briefly ionized the top of Earth's atmosphere above the Pacific Ocean (map), causing a shortwave radio brownout at frequencies below 10 MHz.

Solar Minimum versus Solar Maximum | NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory FriendsofNASA.org: Our Sun is a 4.5 billion-year-old yellow dwarf star—a hot glowing ball of hydrogen and helium—at the center of our solar system. It is about 93 million miles (150 million kilometers) from Earth and our solar system’s only star. The height of the Sun’s activity cycle, known as solar maximum, is a time of greatly increased solar storm activity. Sunspots, eruptions called solar flares, and coronal mass ejectio

Sunspots are relatively cool blotches on the sun’s surface. The number of sunspots is an indicator of how active the sun is. It has the most sunspots when it’s most active—at solar maximum—and has a slightly higher total energy output during that time. Likewise, the sun has the fewest sunspots at solar minimum. The number of sunspots varies over an 11-year solar cycle. Could there be a connection between sunspot cycles and Earth’s weather and climate? If so, is this relevant to the global warmin

Something is happening on the sun's surface that can only be considered as a rarity in a time of solar minimum. Sunspots are not only appearing on the surface, but they are crackling with C-Class solar flares within the sun's magnetic field. | Skywatch Media

☀️ The Sun's Heartbeat: The 11-Year Solar Cycle Did you know our Sun has a “heartbeat”? It’s called the solar cycle, and it lasts about 11 years. During this cycle, the Sun's magnetic field flips, and its activity levels swing between a minimum and a maximum. 🌟 What to Expect: 🌋 Solar Maximum (2025-2026): Get ready for a spectacular show! This period will be the peak of activity. Expect more sunspots, solar flares, and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). For us on Earth, this means more fr

✨️Did you know?✨️The Sun follows an approximately 11-year cycle, known as the solar cycle. During this time, it transitions from low activity (solar minimum) to high activity (solar maximum), marked by more sunspots, coronal mass ejections (CMEs), and solar flares. We are currently nearing the peak of solar cycle 25, expected between late 2024 and 2025. This peak brings frequent geomagnetic storms, making auroras visible at lower latitudes in unexpected latitudes. #space #astronomy #universe #ea
