Recognize Avalanche Terrain *Does our terrain choice match with our strategy to limit avalanche exposure (terrain mindset) *Does this slope have the same aspect/elevation as today’s avalanche problem? *Is the steepest part of the slope inclined near or above 35°? *Is there a dangerous slope above or a terrain trap below? *Is the slope a known or obvious avalanche path? *Are there steep convex roll overs and other hard to avoid trigger points? *Is this a committing slope? Once there, will we stil

What to Do in an Avalanche: If you find yourself caught in an avalanche, stay calm and act quickly. Try to move sideways to escape the main path, as the center flows with the most force. Use a swimming motion to stay closer to the surface and avoid being buried too deeply. As the snow begins to settle, use your hands or arms to create an air pocket in front of your face to help you breathe. If trapped, remain calm to conserve oxygen and energy, and only yell if rescuers are nearby. If you have a

Avalanche Buries Car in Sudden Highway Collapse Captured on Dashcam ❄️🏔️ Anchorage, Alaska — December 7, 2025 Dashcam footage recorded a terrifying moment on a narrow one-lane highway as traffic sat stalled beside a towering mountain lined with tall pine trees. Snow was falling lightly, and although the road looked clear, the surrounding landscape hinted at unstable conditions. Suddenly, a massive avalanche broke free from the right side of the mountain. A roaring wave of snow, ice, and debris

What is Avalanche terrain? We sometimes use slopes steeper than 30 degrees as a ballpark. But in reality each problem has its own range of steepnesses that cause it to react. Many “basal facet persistences” (what we have in Colorado) regularly react on bed surfaces down to 32-34. But many storm slabs take a much steeper angle, many times approaching 40 degrees. Here’s an interesting video from last season that does a good job of illustrating what I felt was the line where “avalanche terrain” beg

Avalanche Alliance on Instagram: "An avalanche path may be well defined or poorly defined. Well defined avalanche paths have associated trim lines in the forest and show signs of repetitive activity, season over season. More poorly defined avalanche paths often leave more subtle clues in the terrain, including: • Flagged trees (stripped of uphill branches) • Groups of trees broken at the same height • Lumps or chunks in a deposit zone • Snow plastered to the uphill side of trees and rocks • Unex
